We have a family member who is involved in a relationship with someone in their mid 50's that claims to be a veteran. His stories don't add up (he doesn't have any), and I found a photo of him on facebook recently in dress blues with a dive bubble, the full gamut of current campaign medals, and a combat action badge. He has four service stripes.

There is a guy that debunks false SEALS, is there a similar person that does this for Marine Recon folks?

There is a Stolen Valor page at "This Aint Hell". They do a pretty good job of exposing posers and fakes.

My wife won't let me, she thinks it will start family drama.

He is mid 50's and has Iraq and Afghanistan campaign medals. The biggest problem I have is he has a combat action ribbon. He told me originally he got medical processed out in basic training. Then I see these photos of him dressed as a Gunnery SGT in dress blues with a dive bubble and a bunch of campaign medals I know he didn't win.

I have every campaign medal since I joined the military. Served from 93 till 2013. Kosovo, Iraq, Afghanistan, GWOTD, GWOTE, but I don't have a combat action ribbon. You have to be engaged in a firefight with the enemy. I got to fly a couple missions against the enemy, and we were heavily mortared. I know he wasn't there he doesn't know the names of the camps, or understand how things on Baghram were laid out.

I don't consider myself to have done anything extra-ordinary. I just served, had a hell of a lot of fun and had a good 20 years. I lost quite a few friends mostly to aircraft crashes, and a few to mortars.

Makes me pretty sore, I guess.

The only information I can offer is found at http://www.archives.gov/...ry/veterans-related.html

I suppose it's possible that he's a re-enactor? (Trying to be charitable here.) But if he has a CAB it had damned well better be his or he is liable to prosecution.

The last thing I remember hearing about Stolen Valor cases in the courts was: The lie is considered protected speech. Unless the lie is used to gain advantage the individual would not otherwise qualify to have (committing fraud), there is no crime committed through such lies. Wearing an unearned CAB, but not using it to get something, is not punishable under the law.

DOD offers this site with names of those awarded various medals: http://valor.defense.gov/

After being struck down, the Act was revised and is now:

The Stolen Valor Act of 2013 amends the federal criminal code to rewrite provisions relating to fraudulent claims about military service to subject to a fine, imprisonment for not more than one year, or both an individual who, with intent to obtain money, property, or other tangible benefit, fraudulently holds himself or herself out to be a recipient of:

a Medal of Honor (Army, Navy, Air Force)
a Distinguished Service Cross,
a Navy Cross,
an Air Force Cross,
a Silver Star,
a Purple Heart,
a Combat Infantryman's Badge,
a Combat Action Badge,
a Combat Medical Badge,
a Combat Action Ribbon,
a Combat Action Medal, or
any replacement or duplicate medal for such medal as authorized by law

That is a fairly common sense law.

I know when I was a young E5, a E2 of mine went to NJP for telling someone he was a SEAL. Kid was just young and dumb and thought he was impressing the person next to him on a flight. Person sitting next to him turned out to be the Commander of a SEAL team, called the kid's Commander and he went to NJP the next week.

In the old days, it was harder to catch someone he just got lucky.

Today it takes minutes.

Interesting. Marines do not get the Combat Action Badge. They get the CAR (Combat Action Ribbon) so right there you can debunk his story. If he's showing the CAB on his uniform and purporting to be a Marine...he's lying.

I meant CAR, not CAB.

If you can find out the last four of his SSN, then you can utilize the Marine Corps' CAR database.

Pull him to the side and call him out on it. Tell him that you suspect or know he's FOS and leave it at that. The look on his face and reaction will tell the real story.
